System archetypes can be used as a stepping-stone to understanding more complex situations. Presently, researchers have identified about a dozen archetypes. Once an archetype is identified it usually suggests areas of high and low leverage. The following section examines probably the most common archetype - shifting the burden.
A short-term solution is repeatedly used to correct a problem with, seemingly, favourable results. As this short-term solution is used more and more, corrective long-term solutions are used less and less. Over time, it becomes more difficult to implement a long-term solution - which in turn increases reliance on the quick fix.
The management principle is to concentrate on the fundamental solution - this is where leverage lies.
