The first phase contains ideas that can be implemented almost immediately with very little investment. The second phase requires a modest increase in resources and calls for investigation and planning over the next year. Finally, we present some brief thoughts about our ultimate goal. We can provide documents containing more details about our phase III plans for staffing structure, facility and equipment needs, and other Center activities.
PHASE I - Ready to begin in 2003-04 using existing structures and few additional resources.
· Establish faculty committee with co-chairs
· Maximize existing laboratory and production spaces
· Emergent Arts Graduate Program started (combining parts of RISD's Digital Media Program with Brown's Computer Music and Multimedia Program)
· Coordinate efforts between undergraduate Film Studies Programs (collaboration between MCM and Film/Video)
· Offer International exhibition, concert series and symposium
· Sponsor joint research in physical computing, scientific visualization and interface design
· Graduate Proctorship to assist with web site and other administrative work
PHASE II - Items requiring study for 2004-05, will require a modest increase in resources
· Establish mechanisms for joint MFA program in Emergent Arts
· Proposal for PhD program in New Media at Studies Brown (There are already three students working towards a Special Studies PhD in this area at Brown. Current MFA students may apply competitively to the program for further study)
· Investigate the possibilities of joint BA/BFA and MA/MFA programs, beginning with Film Studies and Emergent Arts
· Develop fundraising strategy with the help of both offices of development
· Develop research initiatives with help from the VP of Research
· Proposals for Visiting Center Fellows developed
· Request for additional research, meeting, and office space
· Request for equipment
· Hire basic administrative and technical support
PHASE III – Ideal vision and ultimate goal, will require significant additional funding
    • Staff salaries or stipends and benefits for
· Center Director, a prominent person in the field
· Technical Director
· Technical Assistant
· Project Manager/Grant Writer
· Secretary
· Proctors
· Visiting Center Fellows
· New building proposal
The longer-term ambition of the Center is to enhance interaction between students, faculty, visitors and create a sense of community in a specially designed facility. The building would contain research labs, a gallery for exhibitions, a theatre for experimental performance, classrooms, a lecture hall, offices and a coffee shop or informal meeting space. Such a space would ideally offer facilities not currently available at Brown or RISD and could become a major cultural attraction for the city. A downtown location would be ideal.
